Monte Cristo Sliders Recipe

The Monte Cristo flavor combination was first introduced to me in a French café. I wondered about the ham and cheese sandwich that had an egg, raspberry preserves and powdered sugar on top. And I was curious enough to try it. Magnifique! Ever since that café lunch, Monte Cristo’s have caught my eye. It’s like having breakfast for lunch.

These Monte Cristo’s are simplistic on the inside—ham, chicken and swiss. But the mustard egg mixture is poured on top of the sandwiches and baked in. Then, in an unusual move, powdered sugar is sprinkled on top of this sandwich.

An absolute must—serve this sandwich with plenty of raspberry preserves. Don’t forget! Raspberry preserves take this sandwich from so good to WOW!

Ingredients for Monte Cristo Sliders

Ingredients Needed for Monte Cristo Sliders:

Mustard Egg Topping:

This sauce is simply melted unsalted butter, an egg, and Dijon mustard. Don’t substitute regular mustard for the Dijon.

The Sliders:

  • Slider Buns: King’s Hawaiian Sweet Rolls are my favorite slider buns because they are all attached. It’s easy to slice them all in half at once and then lift the tops off as one piece. Plus, they taste so good and are the perfect size.
  • Mayonnaise: Use your favorite mayonnaise. Adding mayo to the sandwich give some moisture, as well as flavor.
  • Deli ham slices: Use thin slices. Cut or fold them to fit the slider bun.
  • Deli chicken slices: You can substitute turkey for chicken. Use thin slices and cut or fold them to fit the slider bun.
  • Swiss cheese: Swiss cheese is the preferred cheese. However, a white cheese, like Provolone, Havarti or Gouda, would taste great as well.

The Garnish:

  • Powdered sugar: Also considered confectioner’s sugar.
  • Raspberry Preserves: Recommended is the European-made Bonne Maman Raspberry Preserves which can now be found at the local US grocery store… or you could make a trip to Europe just for this jam. It’s that good! Raspberry is the flavor that pairs best with the Monte Cristo.

Simple Instructions to Make the Monte Cristo Slider:

  1. Whisk together the Mustard Egg Topping—melted butter, egg, Dijon mustard.
  2. Preheat oven to 350° F. Spray 9×13 baking sheet with non-stick spray.
  3. Create the sliders by cutting slider buns in half, lifting the tops off and setting them aside. Spread mayonnaise on the bottom buns. Then, top with deli ham, deli turkey, and Swiss cheese. Return the tops back to the sliders.
  4. Pour mustard egg topping over the tops of the buns until the sauce is gone. Spread with pastry brush as needed.
  5. Loosely cover with foil, like a tent, so the foil does not touch the buns. Bake at 350° F for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes or until cooked through and golden brown.
  6. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with raspberry preserves.
